ROSES: How to Grow Rose from Cutting, 4 Common Problems & Ultimate Care Tips

Rose is a woody perennial flowering plant in Rosa genus. It is a bushy plant that can be seen as shrubs or trailing plant with stems having pointed prickles on them. This plant varies in size from miniature flowers to climbing plant reaching upto 5-7 mtrs  height. These flowers are insect pollinated in nature
Asia has the largest native species of roses followed by Europe, North America and North West Africa.

Generally, Rose flowers are bunch of five petals but Rosa Sericea has only four petals. Petals  are divided into two lobes which is usually white /pink (or yellow /red in some species). Below the petals,there are five Sepals which are green in colour.  The flowers vary in size and colours. From white to dark red,yellow to light pink,each color defines a unique emotion.

Leaves:

The leaves are alternately settled on the stems.  Usually, rose leaves are 5-15 cm long which are pinnate with 5-9 leaflets and basal stipules. These leaflets have serrated margin and often have small prickles on underside of stem.

The berry shaped structure in rose is the aggregate fruit which is called rose hip. Most species have red rose hip but some species like Rosa Pimpinellifolia have dark purple to black hips. The rose hip has an outer fleshy layer having 5 – 160 seeds or achenes. Dog rose and Rugosa rose have Vitamin C rich rose hip.

The sharp thorns covering the rose stems are called prickles. These sickle shaped hooky thorns aid the rose in hanging onto other vegetation when growing over it. Some species have vestigial prickles that have no sharp points.
The presence of prickles don’t bother the hungry  Deer.
So, Be aware of the prickles while plucking Roses from your garden for your dear one!

How to Grow Rose from CUTTINGS ?


Roses are among those plants which can be grown from the cuttings! By following few steps ,we can have as much rose plants in our garden as we desire. Let’s do it together and here we go!

1.Select the right branch for Cuttings

There are three types of branches in a  rose plant. Hard Wood branch is the oldest branch of the plant and is too hard. Semi hard Wood branch is the middle aged branch which is neither  too soft nor too hard. Soft Wood branch is the new branch in the plant.
Choose a Semi hard wood branch of rose plant for taking cuttings.

2. Make correct cut on cuttings

After choosing the semi hard wood branch, cut the branch into 5 -6 inches cuttings.

With the help of knife or blade, make a cut of 45° on the cutting. This part will be used for rooting. Now scratch that rooting area .

3. Apply Rooting Harmone

Rooting harmones increases the growth of plant and helps the cuttings of a plant to develop roots faster.
Apply the rooting harmone on the scratched area of cuttings.

Some easily available rooting harmones are:

● Honey (2 cups boiled water + 1tsp honey )
● Apple Cider Vinegar
● Aspirin (crush the Aspirin into powder and dissolve into water)
● Cinnamon

4. Planting the Cutting into pot

Put the cuttings into pot or garden soil. Cuttings should be tightly inserted into the soil, so press the soil with hands to ensure that the cuttings are firmly inserted.
Now, give adequate water to the pot.

5. Choose the pot location

Rose plants love to be in sunny place. So, choose a location for your pot where it will get 3-4 hrs sun light.

After 3-4 weeks, you will see new leaves on the cuttings.
Your cuttings have grown into Rose Plants!!

Prepare Pot Mix or Soil for Rose


Rose plant can be grown easily in normal garden soil but for its better growth , pot mix should be prepared.

Pot mix for rose = 50% garden soil + 25% coco peat + 25% vermicompost

Neem manure
and sand can also be added to the pot mix.

Make coco peat at home!

1. Take 2-3 coconuts.
2. Remove the coconut husk from its shell.
3. Blend this husk in a mixer. Blend it until coconut fibers turn into fine powder.
4. Soak the peat (powder) into water for about 1 hour.
5. Remove the excess water by squeezing it with hands. Coco peat is ready to use.

 When to take cuttings?

Best time to take the cuttings is April to July. So that the roots are produced till winter.

Watering conditions for Rose

1. During summers, water the plant daily.
2. Follow the rule of More water, less frequently i.e give adequate amount of water to the plant in every alternate day .
3. Avoid watering during heat of the day. Water in morning.
4. Do not over water the plant otherwise roots will become rotten and plant will die.

Common Problems in Roses & their Remedies 


1. Black spots on foliage

We have often seen the foliage covered with the black spots. These spots are caused by fungus.

Remedy
1. Place the rose plant in correct location.
2. When watering rose, water in the bottom of plant not on leaves.
3. Remove infected foliage as soon as possible.
4. Use Sulphur as fungus can’t germinate in sulphur film.

2. Powdery mildew in rose

Its a fungal disease in plants. It covers the stems, foliage, buds with its white powder.

Remedy
Spray anti fungul liquid on the affected area.

3. Rusting or damaged leaves

When the rose leaves turn reddish orange in colour, it is called rusting & the discoloration of leaves is called rust. This rusting turns the leaves into black colour and the plant dies soon.

Remedy
1. Remove damaged leaves.
2. Water at the bottom of the plant in morning only.
3. Provide spacing and air circulation to the plants.
4. Spray anti fungul liquid once in a week.

4.Spider Mites

Tiny spider mites can be often seen in the rose plant that are yellow, red and green in colour. These mites suck the juices from the plant. As a result, rose flowers turn malformed.

Remedy
1. Spray the water underside the leaves.
2. Use neem oil as it is a non toxic insect killer.

Uses of Rose

With its royal beauty, rose is collected as an ornamental flower. Its presence converts  any dull place into an aromatic and fresh place. Any ordinary sweet dish becomes a mouth watering pudding, when rose extract is added to it. This aromatic list of rose benefits and its uses keeps going on and on.
 
1. Cut Flowers
Roses are the popular crop for domestic as well as commercial cut flowers. They are harvested and cut when they are in bud form. These rose buds are then kept in refrigerated conditions until they are ready for display for the sale.
In temperate climate, cut roses are grown on greenhouses. In high temperature places, they are grown undercover to prevent the flowers.
Some roses are dyed artificially by using dyed water.

2. Perfumes
Rose perfumes are made from rose oil which is the mixture of volatile essential oil obtained from its stems and crushed rose petals .
About 2000 roses are needed to produce 1gm of oil.

3. Food & Drinks
Rose hips are used to make jam, jelly, marmalade,  soup and brewed tea.
They are also used to make rose hip syrup,oil which is used in beauty products.
Rose water has a unique flavour and fragrance and is widely used for making sweets like barfi, gulab jamun, halwa, kulfi, nougat etc.

4. Medicine
Rose hip is used as a food supplement. In ancient Chinese tradition, it was used as medicine for treatment of stomach problems.
